At the start of December 2018, the Japanese tv company NHK started tv transmissions in veru high UHD quality. That is in 8K quality which is 16 times better screen definition than what we now know as "high definition". All this is in the run up to the 2020 Tokyo Olympics which will be broadcast in 8K.
The wonderful paradox in all this high-tech gear is that to demonstrate the actual quality of the 8K screens, they had to use a film from the 60's. The film is the one that changed all movies forever - 2001 A Space Odessy by the British director Stanley Kubrik.
Yukinori Kida, Executive Director of Broadcasting, NHK explained that...“Although many films were shot in 35mm, this film was one of the few shot in 70mm, the highest quality available at the time."
What is extremely striking is that 2001, A Space Odessy is significantly far-sighted and visionary. The key issue is really about the clash between Artificial Intelligence (AI) and human thought. How a rogue algorithm gets into deadly conflict with reason and human thinking. These are exactly the quandaries we have today, 50 years later. How amazingly prophetic!
The other aspect is that the visual definition of 8K screens also needs 8K sound. There is little point in having scalpel sharp screen vision together with an audio standard so low that it sounds like it comes from a tin can. You are already in STEENSSEN's website. Oh and by the way - do NOT let your Amazon Alexa or your Apple Siri watch 2001, A Space Odessy. It puts too many ideas into their AI bot-heads.
